An Interview with David Lynch by most prominent Croatian weekly magazine "Globus" done by Bisera Fabrio (on Croatian Language "Bisera" means "Pearl"), as a reflection to the previous meeting with Croatian President Stjepan Mesic in Estonia. Interview is published on November 23rd 2007. Translated by Stjepan Spanicek.

MESIC'S FRIEND FOR MEDITATION

By looking into completely empty, white sheet of paper, David Lynch is taking blue marker from his suit. As he is entering his pocket, his sleeves slips away reveling that on one hand he has an orange string - symbol of peace, and on another red string as a cabalistic bracelet. It is a noontime and we are talking with famous film producer in the Netherland, just near by the border of Germany, in small village named Vlodrop, which is very difficult to be found on any map. Those who like Lynch's movies immediately would find symbolic of Bosh Hotel in National Park where David Lynch arranged his staying, with idyllic, deeply enigmatic and mystic places of American countryside where main events of his movies are taking place. Hotel is placed in the forest, completely surrounded with tries, and inside the hotel atmosphere is very quite and pleasant, but you would never expect that famous film producer from Hollywood, cult author whose repertoire is provoking worshiping of movie making professionals, fidelity of fans and respect of actors, would stay there.

EUROPEAN TOUR Lynch can enjoy his peace here and nobody is disturbing him even though several times within the week he is traveling to some other European cities. Tour is close to be ended; right now David Lynch is on the way to Los Angelos after he visited 20 countries in 40 days. But, actually David Lynch doesn't like to travel . The blue marker is needed that he can illustrate his spiritual philosophy and transcendental meditation. Three sheets of paper are needed for complete picture, but he is rarely drawing everything. Last time he made drawings for Shimon Peres, President of Israel.
Before meeting with David Lynch vice president of his Foundation Bob Roth gave as a brief introduction. Bob is explaining that "David is sometimes talking on abstract way, using metaphors" and he is entering us to the basic principles of Lynch's meditative philosophy by being completely sure that producer alone will be in the mood to talk about that on the wide scale. There is a rumor David Lynch is pretty closed for journalists and he doesn't like interviews. He is completely irritated when journalist are asking "what was he thinking when he was shooting this and this scene in this and this movie."
When he starts to describe idea of opening schools for meditation and peace, he talks on a dramatic way, but not to loud. Of course, other hotel's guests, who are sitting in the hotel's Café as we do, are eager to listen what producer is talking. It seams nobody except us is being hired in the hall. Soon some of waiters have got an idea to increase the intensity of music (some ultra sweet American pop evergreen was running on), and curious listeners were disabled to follow continuation of our interview.
Nicely dressed in rockabilly white shirt and black suite and with carefully hair arrangement in Elvis style (Lynch is big fan of King) he starts to talk about his plane to make a new movie about his European Tour and talks. That will be documentary in Lynch's style, unique project which will tell everything about schedule, speakers, themes and possibilities for opening transcendental schools of peace in European countries. Meeting with Croatian President will be included also:
"I would like that one of the first schools in Europe will be opened in Croatia", Lynch said very openly. He will send all necessary information and materials about transcendental Schools to the Cabinet of President as soon he returns to his home in Los Angeles and he hope that Stjepan Mesic (and his wife Milka who is prone to alternative philosophy and practicing of meditation and macrobiotic) will help that this idea will be realized exactly in the Croatia as soon is possible.

POSITIVE VIBRATIONS As the only Croatian journalists we've got an exclusive interview with David Lynch, because he sensed strong connection and positive vibration with Croatia. His intention is to establish schools in Europe where students will learn transcendental mediation in parallel with classical subjects and he would like that one of the first schools will be exactly in Croatia. It seems that schools of peace, in this moment when he is talking about, are more important than making movies and art. Since he met Croatian President Stjepan Mesic, during their staying in the same hotel in Tallin the Capitol of Estonia, he is even happier with this plan. It was proved that Croatian President loves and respects Lynch's movies very much and immediately on the very beginning of the talk producer told us that Mesic made a big impact on him and that he has a "nice face" and very nice soul; inner energy. Two men made a friendship instantly and Lynch is not denying his encouragement.
"Chris Bush, one member of my team, was in front of the hotel when he saw colon and police escort. He had asked who that is and he was told that the guest of the hotel is Croatian President. Chris had waited that President enter the hotel, waved him and in the very same moment president waved him to. President entered the elevator and Chris immediately came to me saying that President of Croatia is in the hotel. I responded that it would be very nice to have drink with him if he agrees. The action to accomplish this started and by chance my team members met with members of President's team in the elevator and the meeting was arranged. In the meantime we contacted people from Croatia who are practicing transcendental meditation to see if they have some contact with President" - Lynch is talking to us on a very delightful way mentioning that he was enjoying coffee with President.
"I liked your President immediately; on his face all emotions are seen. He was very interested for our plan for school of peace and he said we shall stay in contact and we've got photos for memories also. The meeting was really very pleasant" - Lynch added.
MATTER AND MIND Drawing done by David Lynch is divided to matter and mind.
"All our senses are turned outward and our appreciation of happiness is not continuous because we are sensing it instantaneously. In transcendental meditation you are learning mantra which is helping to turn your consciousness inward, within yourself. Then you are naturally diving into different levels of mind where you can experience and enliven happiness and with more meditation the level of creativity and energy is increased. In USA children are under big stress. They do not like to go to school. They are afraid of schools because there is a lot of violence there. Schools are in depression, nobody is learning, suicides are happening, children are pressed with medicine for curing depression and nobody is taking care about consequences on their health. If we give them the knowledge about technique of transcendental meditation situation will change incredibly! This is not any religion, no any sect, it is not dealing with matter of confession, not involving contemplation; it is just an easy and innocent method which will help you on a very easy way. Even the kid of ten years of age can do that. If child is meditating for about twenty minutes, it will be happier, with more creativity, will be having better grades, it will learn more easily! American schools already started with introducing of transcendental meditation and most opened for new methods was school in San Francisco which faced incredible changes. Thanks to reducing the violence children started to go to school with joy, grades are better. And the best of all; humans are like bulbs. We are spreading joy and happiness around us to all other people. We shall all feel better" - famous producer is making clear to us. Lynch founds that transcendental meditation would be having very positive influence on soldiers who passed traumatic experiences during warring and that would be of great help in Croatia also.
"With group meditation we can accomplish peace on Earth, and that is supposed to be an interest of all."
Lynch doesn't believe this is impossible. Therefore, in sixth decade of his life, he has dedicated himself to that mission and unbreakably is searching chance to make something good and worthy for the entire World: "Everything new is often difficult to be embraced by the people. And I am trying to tear down these prejudices."

SPIRITUAL LEADER OF LYNCH AND CLINT EASTWOOD

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi is founder of transcendental meditation technique. That idea he promoted all over the world and earned a lot of devotees, especially among American and British movie and music stars. Beatles and Beach Boys have learned transcendental meditation from Maharishi and among film makers the most faithful followers are David Lynch and Clint Eastwood. David Lynch was entered into the world of meditation by spiritual teacher for whom he once said she was reminding him on Doris Day. Since that day Lynch is meditating twice a day for 20 minutes. "For that nothing else is needed except to be relaxed. No need for making special atmosphere, no need for absolute silence and peace, you just relax yourself and meditate, diving into the energy field from where you generate power, spirituality, creativity, happiness. And when people are asking me how shall we know that we meditated for 20 minutes, how shall we know that meditation ended; the answer is very simple and not enigmatic at all. You will look on your watch, what else" - Lynch says.

SHIMON PERES LIKED MY IDEA TOO

Schools which are using meditation already exist in the world. There are even three in Israel; in Haifa, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, and just after talk with Shimon Peres he succeeded to make deal for school opening and to make public interest for his project. I draw everything to Shimon Peres and explained him how this is functioning. On the beginning he was watching me on a wired way, as I am silly, but very quickly he realized what is all that about. He said idea is good and we could try with few students but I stopped him saying: "Mister President, for Israel several hundreds students are needed who would meditate, only few are not enough to establish harmony and peace... In Croatia 250 students must meditate twice a day" - Lynch said to us while mentioning meeting with President of Israel.

MOVIES OF DARK THEMES AND ENIGMATIC CHARACTERS

Lynch's movies have influenced up on complete generation of producers. His name is connected with heavy, dark movies which provoke thrill and embarrassment. Lynch likes street movies and his characters live double life and have secrets; they are hallucinating. Even though he didn't get an Oscar, he was nominated three times; first in 1980. for traumatic movie "The Elephant Man", and six years later for "Blue velvet" with Isabella Rossellini. The third nomination happened in 2001. with "Mulholland Drive". Gold Palm of Cannes he won in 1990. with "Wild at Heart", and his last movie is "Inland Empire". He is known to TV spectators by "Twin Peaks", cult serial about Laura Palmer assassination. Lynch is being worshiped by actors he is working with and they are always ready to work with him; except Laura Dern and Kyle McLaughlin Lynch's favorites are Naomi Watts, Justin Theroux, Nicolas Cage and Isabella Rossellini with whom he was connected intimately for four years.
